1111Doing Time_works by Tehching Hsieh at the Prisons' Palace (St, Mark's)
"Life is a life sentence. Life is passing time. Life is free thinking". These few words describe the creative universe of Tehching Hsieh, a Taiwanese artist who immigrated illegally to the United States where in the 1970s and 1980s he realized five multimedia performances which lasted a year each. Thanks to a detailed set-up of documents and artefacts, "Doing Time" shows for the first time two of his One Year Performances as well as photographic series and other works made in Taipei in 1973; juvenilia that anticipated the themes dear to the artist: environment and time, survival and existence, images and documents are fragile references of an ineffable élan vital.
